Disney Genie, Genie+, & Lightning Lane: Explained

Last updated 1 April 2023.

Genie, Genie+, and Individual Lightning Lanes are HERE at Walt Disney World Resort and Disneyland Resort. They are a little confusing, so I’m here to break it all down for you!

Genie

Genie is a complimentary feature built directly into the My Disney Experience app (for Walt Disney World) and the Disneyland app. It will use algorithms and park data to help guests plan their days, with information updated constantly. Take a look at the infographic below to learn about some of Genie’s features!

Features of Disney Genie

Genie+ & Lightning Lane

Genie+ is an optional purchase at both Walt Disney World and Disneyland, allowing Lightning Lane access to over 40 attractions at Walt Disney World and over 15 attractions at Disneyland. Lightning Lane is the new name for the former FastPass queues. Individual attraction selections for high-demand attractions will also be available, for an additional purchase separate from Genie+. Check out the graphic below for further details!

*Note that as of 11 October 2022 – pricing has increased at both Walt Disney World Resort and Disneyland Resort.

New Pricing as of 11 October 2022 at Disneyland Resort: Starting at $25 per ticket per day

New Pricing as of 11 October 22 at Walt Disney World Resort: Starting at $15 per ticket per day

One very important thing to note is that NOT ALL LIGHTNING LANE ATTRACTIONS ARE INCLUDED IN A GENIE+ PURCHASE. There will be some attractions, the “high demand attractions” that will require a separate purchase through Individual Lightning Lanes! These will use a flexible pricing model, based on day & time. Additionally, these “high demand attractions” that are purchased via Individual Lightning Lanes are limited to 2 attractions per guest per day.

At Walt Disney World, guests can begin booking Lightning Lane selections through Genie+ starting at 7am. Individual Lightning Lane purchases begin at 7am if you are a guest of a Disney Resort Hotel, while offsite guests need to wait until the park opens.

At Disneyland Resort, all guests can book Lightning Lane selections through Genie+ once you have entered the park.

Lightning Lane prices, from what we’ve seen, range from $7 per guest to $25 per guest, per attraction.

DAS Users

DAS is Disability Access Service, a complimentary service Disney offers to guests with disabilities that are unable to wait in a traditional queue. DAS changes are coming with the introduction of Disney Genie, and this is something to be excited about, especially if you are a DAS user! Simply enroll up to 30 days prior to your arrival date via live video chat with a Cast Member. Then, guests may pre-plan 2 experiences per day. Once guests using DAS are in the park, they may select attractions via the app without having to speak with a Cast Member. If a DAS user does not have a smartphone, in-park services will still be offered!

Note that DAS users who want to use DAS accessible entries for attractions that only offer virtual queue without a standby must still join the virtual queue or (if applicable) purchase an Individual Lightning Lane.

What Free Options Exist?

Okay, so we’ve established that the only way to really skip a line is through Genie+ and Lightning Lane purchase. However, there are 2 ways to avoid waiting in line, in certain scenarios!

First, the virtual queue system is still around for Guardians of the Galaxy: Cosmic Rewind and Tron Lightcycle Run. So, at 7am, be ready to get your boarding group! A second virtual queue opens at 1pm once you’ve scanned into the park, but if you already joined the 7am drop you aren’t eligible for the 1pm queue. If you’re a guest of a deluxe resort hotel and the park is offering extra magic hours in the evening, there will be a 3rd drop just for you at 6pm!

Secondly, single rider is an option on select attractions. There are far more opportunities for single riders at Disneyland than there are at Walt Disney World, but this is still a free way to skip the queue if you don’t mind riding separately from your party.
